Country music superstars, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert are getting a divorce.
In a statement issued to the Associated Press, the couple said that this was not the future that they envisioned. The couple asked for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.
The award-winning country artists were married for four years; their lavish Texas wedding was in a cover story in US Weekly in May 2011. On Monday, the couple announced their split, though the divorce documents were filed two weeks earlier by Shelton in Oklahoma.
The news was not surprising to fans. For years, the couple has been plagued by rumors of a rocky marriage. According to reports, for months Shelton suspected that Lambert was having an affair and he filed for divorce after his suspicions were allegedly confirmed.
The accusations of Lambert's infidelity come amid rumors that Shelton has a history of drinking and flirting with other women. Despite the tabloid stories, the couple has been known for fiercely fighting back on Twitter and laughing off rumors of a divorce.
Shelton, 39, and Lambert, 31, fell for each other during CMT's "100 Greatest Duets" special in 2005, where the pair collaborated on "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma."
At the time, he was a famous country star, and she was an up and coming star who recently finished third on USA's Nashville Star. When they met, Shelton was married to his first wife, who he divorced a year later. He and Lambert began dating shortly after the divorce, drawing much speculation from onlookers about the timing of their "relationship."
Nashville's golden couple frequently spoke about the challenges of being married while on the road and on opposite coasts. One day before the announcement, Shelton was spotted wearing his wedding ring at a NASCAR race in New Hampshire.
Meanwhile, Lambert showed signs there was trouble brewing at home when she broke down crying while performing "The House That Built Me" during the Cheyenne Frontier Days Festival.
