California Child Support Guidelines

California Family Code § 4055 provides a complex algebraic formula to determine the amount of support that the supporting parent is required to pay every month. The formula is as follows:

  • CS = K [HN - (H%)(TN)]

The legend for these components is as follows:

  • CS = Child support amount
  • K = Amount of both parents' income allocated for child support (Section 3 of Cal. Fam. Code §4055)
  • HN = High earner's net monthly disposable income
  • H% = Approximate percentage of time that the high earner has or will have primary physical responsibility for the children compared to the other parent
  • TN = total net monthly disposable income of both parties
